The original meeting that began the introduction of Net Mundial was held in Sao Paulo in Brazil, late in April 2014. It was organised because of the shocking revelations by Edward Snowden of the secret surveillance held by the United States government on citizens around the world. There were 1,480 people from 97 different countries present at the meeting, to talk about a wide range of internet issues such as government, civil, technical, and academia.
The end result was a clear set of principles that must be followed to protect privacy whilst allowing for cyber security. The organisation under the same NMI name was formed by the big internet players in an attempt to realise the goals set at the conference, also known as the Netmundial Principles.
